Ghanaian football has been plunged into mourning following a severe incident in which young footballer Dominic Frimpong tragically lost his life. The event occurred after a shooting attack on the bus transporting his team, Berekum Chelsea, causing deep shock in the sports community and beyond. This act of violence has raised serious concerns about the safety of players and teams traveling for matches in the country.
Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old talent and striker for Berekum Chelsea, became a victim of this suspected attack by armed robbers. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) immediately expressed “deep shock and great sorrow” over his loss. They extended their sincerest condolences to Frimpong’s family, his teammates, and all club staff, emphasizing that Dominic was a “promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league” in Ghanaian football.
According to reports from Berekum Chelsea, the team bus was returning on Sunday from a Ghana Premier League match, where they had played away against Samartex in Samreboi, when they were attacked by “masked men armed with pistols and automatic rifles.” The club explained that the attackers “had blocked the road to obstruct” the bus’s passage. When the driver attempted to reverse, “they started shooting at the bus.” To escape, the players and team staff were forced to flee and take shelter in nearby bushes after this armed assault.
So far, the suspects for this violent event have not been apprehended, while investigations into the incident are ongoing. The GFA has called for “all necessary measures to be taken to ensure justice is served” and has confirmed that it is in continuous contact with the relevant authorities and the affected club. Furthermore, the Federation has stated that it will review and strengthen sports security measures for clubs traveling for competitions within Ghana, with the aim of “preventing such tragic events in the future” and improving the safety of footballers.
Dominic Frimpong had joined Berekum Chelsea in January, on loan from Aduana FC, according to local media reports. The striker was expected to remain with the team until the end of the Premier League season and had scored two goals in his thirteen appearances. His death marks a great loss for Ghanaian football and raises critical questions about security standards in professional sports in the region.
