Chelsea bolster full-back options with Pep Chavarría arrival from Rayo Vallecano

Chelsea have completed the signing of Pep Chavarría from Rayo Vallecano, with the left-back becoming the ninth new addition to the first-team at Stamford Bridge this summer.

The 28-year-old, who has signed a five-year deal, will provide competition for Jorrel Hato following Marc Cucurella‘s move to Real Madrid earlier this summer

Chavarría’s arrival further signals a change in transfer policy from Chelsea, as the club seeks to add more experience to the squad, despite previously mostly targeting youth.

This summer, they’ve signed two players over the age of 30 in Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson.

Chavarría played a key role in Rayo Vallecano’s impressive 2025-26 season, in which they reached the Conference League final and finished eighth in LaLiga.

The Spaniard featured in 44 games in all competitions for Rayo Vallecano last season and spent four years at the club.

“I’m so excited to get started,” Chavarría told club media. “This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success.

“There are a lot of people who have helped me get to this moment and I have to thank my family. They have always supported me and today is only possible because of them.”

Chelsea have once again been extremely busy in the transfer window this summer, having also signed Morgan Rogers in a record-deal for a British player, along with Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Valentín Barco, and more.

They’ve also said goodbye to Cucurella, Andrey Santos, Trevoh Chalobah and others, while Alejandro Garnacho has joined Aston Villa on loan.
