Real Madrid footballer Raúl Asencio has been convicted of a traffic offence for driving under the influence of alcohol, a spokesperson from the press office of Gran Canaria’s High Court of Justice confirmed on Wednesday.

Asencio was stopped at a sobriety checkpoint in Gran Canaria at 6.30 a.m. CET on Aug. 16 while driving a Porsche Macan.

The player tested positive in the first breathalyser test (0.90 mg/l) and also in the second test (0.88 mg/l), four times the legal limit.

The footballer admitted to the facts in a summary trial and was fined €14,400 (€120 per day for four months), in addition to having his driver’s licence suspended for eight months.

Real Madrid, aware of the incident, declined to comment when contacted by ESPN.

However, a source confirmed that the club will sanction Asencio according to its internal disciplinary code.

Asencio, 23, is currently injured after suffering a muscle problem in his right thigh on July 30.

Real Madrid’s official medical report stated that his recovery was being monitored, but sources indicated he will return to the team in mid-September.

Asencio was indicted last May by Gran Canaria’s High Court of Justice in a case involving the alleged recording of sexual images of a woman and a minor and the distribution of said images without their consent.

The criminal charges to Asencio solely cover the distribution of explicit videos, according to the charges, stating that the evidence had demonstrated the Madrid defender’s non-involvement in recording them.
