Canada international Jonathan David scored the winner as Atlético Madrid defeated Real Madrid 2-1 on Sunday.
David scored his third goal in three games to help Atleti to a two-goal lead at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano against their cross-city rivals.
Real’s Dean Huijsen had given away a penalty and was sent off after 52 minutes, enabling Alejandro Grimaldo to score the opener from the spot for the home side.
Canadian David scored after 59 minutes when he converted Giuliano Simeone‘s cross. Antonio Rüdiger reduced the deficit in the 89th minute but it wasn’t enough for Real.

The derby was the first between Jose Mourinho, who returned to Real this summer, and Diego Simeone since 2014.
Madrid wanted a red card for Atlético’s Cristian Romero in the first half after he stepped on the leg of Jude Bellingham. The incident was reviewed by the VAR but Romero was only shown a yellow card.
The result moved Atlético within five points of Barcelona, who won 3-1 at Sevilla on Saturday after a hat trick by Raphinha.

Real Madrid dropped to third. They are six points behind Baracelona, who have won seven in a row to start the season.
Vinícius Júnior had a lackluster performance and was substituted for Yan Diomande in the 54th minute.
