Harry Kane hat trick powers Bayern Munich to German Cup title

Harry Kane hit a hat trick and took his season’s tally to 61 goals as Bayern Munich beat Stuttgart 3-0 in the German Cup final, to lift the trophy for a 21st time and the first since 2020.

Kane put Bayern ahead 10 minutes into the second half as Vincent Kompany’s side completed a domestic double.

The England captain struck the crossbar with a powerful effort with 10 minutes left but moments later was celebrating his second of the night and 60th of the season, firing in after a one-two with Luis Díaz.

Kane was not done there and ended the night by completing his hat trick, beating Alexander Nübel from the penalty spot after Angelo Stiller had blocked Michael Olise’s cross with an arm.

Stuttgart had started the match brightly and were the first to threaten in an opening 45 minutes of few chances, but after Kane’s opening goal and a subsequent break in play due to a build-up of smoke inside Berlin‘s Olympic Stadium they struggled to regain any momentum.

Stuttgart, winners of this trophy last season, came into the match having already lost three times to Bayern this season, most recently a 4-2 Bundesliga defeat in April.

But that was their only defeat in their last seven games in all competitions and the confidence showed as they looked the stronger of the two sides early on.

Jonas Urbig, deputising for the injured Manuel Neuer in the Bayern goal, got down well to keep out a dangerous low strike from Maximilian Mittelstädt, but Stuttgart could not make their early possession pay.

At the other end Stuttgart keeper Nübel misjudged an Olise cross, but Kane could not find the net with an improvised effort.

Late in the first half Nübel parried a long-range strike from Josip Stanisic and was grateful there was no Bayern player on hand for the follow up.

Stuttgart were probably the happier of the two teams at the break, but momentum switched with the opening goal.

After Chris Führich was booked for a foul on Olise, Joshua Kimmich sent the resulting free-kick out to Olise on the right and his cross from the byline found Kane unmarked at the back post, where he headed beyond a helpless Nübel.

The build-up of smoke forced referee Sven Jablonski to bring play to a temporary halt, and when it did resume Bayern should have doubled their lead.

Díaz cut inside off the left wing and hit a low shot which Nübel could only parry into the path of Konrad Laimer, who inexplicably missed the open goal from close range.

Jamal Musiala fired just wide and Kane was then unlucky to see a powerful effort from range rattle the crossbar, but the second goal soon arrived.

Kane exchanged passes with Díaz and spun away from Chema Andrés before firing in from the centre of the box to put the game beyond reach for Stuttgart.

Then, with time running out, Olise’s cross struck Stiller on the arm and Kane did not waste the hat trick chance as he placed his penalty beyond the reach of Nübel.
