Liverpool are facing a period of significant behind-the-scenes upheaval following the departure of Michael Edwards, the chief executive officer of football for owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
Edwards, who served as sporting director under Jurgen Klopp until 2022, returned to FSG in 2024, with a view to lead the ownership’s operation to acquire a second club. However, with no discernible progress on that front, Edwards has tendered his resignation and will depart immediately despite having one year left on his contract.
Following his exit, FSG president Mike Gordon is expected to take a more hands-on role in the day-to-day running of Liverpool.

Edwards’ departure compounds the sense of transition at Anfield this summer, with Arne Slot having already been replaced as head coach by former AFC Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola. There is also doubt over the long-term future of sporting director Richard Hughes — who appointed Iraola and whose contract also expires in the summer of 2027 — amid links to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.
In a statement on Friday, FSG described Edwards’ exit as “the culmination of a planned transition following the completion of key strategic priorities.” However, sources told ESPN Liverpool’s American ownership failed in their efforts to convince Edwards to stay after he expressed his frustration over the lack of progress in expanding their portfolio.
FSG explored more than 20 different clubs — including French side Bordeaux and Spanish outfit Málaga — before shelving plans to add another team to their stable earlier this year.

Edwards departs having played a key role in the evolution of Liverpool’s football operation, which saw them clinch the Premier League title in 2025.
“It has been a privilege to return to Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool Football Club at such an important moment,” Edwards said. “I leave believing Liverpool is in a strong position, with outstanding people, a clear direction and the foundations in place for continued success.

“When I returned, I was excited not only by the opportunity to help guide Liverpool through an important period of transition, but also by the chance to help shape FSG’s wider football ambitions. While that broader project ultimately evolved differently to how we had originally envisaged, I am proud of the work our team undertook in presenting ownership with a broad range of thoughtful and well-developed options for the future.
“I’d like to thank Mike, John [Henry], Tom [Werner] and everyone across FSG and Liverpool for their support and friendship and, most importantly, the supporters, whose passion makes this club so special. I will always be grateful to have been part of its story.”
