Michael Carrick on Man United’s defeat to Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan: ‘No excuses’

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick said there were “no excuses” after his side fell to a 4-2 preseason defeat to AC Milan in Wroclaw.

The Red Devils led twice against the Serie A side, newly under the stewardship of former United head coach Ruben Amorim.

It was only their second defeat in a run of six preseason matches, which included a win over Atletico Madrid and a 1-1 draw with European champions Paris Saint-Germain

“On the whole, [preseason has] been very good, I think there a lot of positives to take from it,” Carrick told MUTV post-match.

“We’re disappointed with today. We didn’t play well today, so there’s reasons for that. In some ways, we need to learn from it, we need to improve, some of the boys playing some of their first minutes.”

“There’s different reasons anyway — no excuses, we just didn’t play very well today,” he added.

Harry Maguire headed United in front with just over 100 seconds played, before Samuel Chukwueze popped up at the back post to draw Milan level.

Carrick’s men restored their lead in the second half through Patrick Dorgu before Alphadjo Cissè, Gonçalo Ramos and Ruben Loftus-Cheek scored in quick succession to turn it around.

Marcus Rashford appeared in United colours for the first time since December 2024 when he was introduced on the hour mark, following the return of his loan spell at Barcelona, amid six changes made during the match.

“A lot of the boys will be better for the minutes,” Carrick said.

“We’ve got a good squad, so there’s decisions to be made.”

United begin their Premier League campaign on Aug. 22 when they visit newly-promoted Hull.
