Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany ‘optimistic’ over Jamal Musiala recovery

Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany remains “very optimistic” winger Jamal Musiala can fully recover from the neurological condition which saw him twice collapse on the pitch.

The 23-year-old suffered incidents in both the friendlies against RB Leipzig and then Heidenheim on Tuesday night.

Germany international Musiala revealed in a subsequent post on Instagram that he was suffering from “brief, temporary — but treatable — absence seizures resulting from a neurological dysfunction” following a change in his medication and there was no long-term health risk.

Kompany confirmed the club had been aware of Musiala’s condition for some time and while the winger would not be involved in Saturday’s Super Cup match at Borussia Dortmund, he is expected to make a full recovery.

“It is the first time for the public, so obviously a lot of questions arise. We have been dealing with it for longer, though,” Kompany told a press conference on Friday.

“That initial shock was a while ago, since then we have been given a lot more information and have made decisions with the help of the best experts. Jamal has the support of everyone.

“Internally we are at a point where we are not speaking about it much anymore. We have been prepared for it for a long time, have our processes and are very optimistic.”

Kompany confirmed Musiala has been training individually as he continues to adapt to the changes in his treatment.

“It was Jamal’s wish to communicate it. Internally we have known about it for longer, including the players. For us it has become everyday life,” the Bayern boss said.

“We as the Bayern family stand together, will give him all the support, which we already have and will continue to do so. We know how to deal with it — we do it together.

“He changed something in the medication, which is why the episodes became visible. Now we want to get back to where it was before, when these episodes didn’t occur.”

Bayern will also be without Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl for Saturday’s curtain-raiser at Signal Iduna Park.

Kompany is determined the Bundesliga champions can lay down a marker for the campaign ahead.

“It would be great if we could win a title in Dortmund,” the Bayern head coach.

“Maybe it could have been with 50-50 fans, that would have added a bit more of a final atmosphere, but winning a title away in Dortmund would also be very nice.

“The quality and power of the Dortmund team is high – there is no tougher challenge in the Bundesliga.”
