Lautaro Martínez scores stoppage-time winner as Inter come from two down to beat Napoli

Lautaro Martínez scored a stoppage-time winner as Inter Milan came from behind to beat Napoli 3-2 and maintain their perfect start to the new Serie A season.

Napoli, with former AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri back at San Siro, had looked in control after two goals in the space of five minutes early in the second half from Matteo Politano and Rasmus Højlund.

Martínez, though, started the fightback before Marcus Thuram headed an equaliser with eight minutes left and the Inter captain then snatched victory in added time after Napoli failed to clear a corner.

The winning effort was Martínez’s 134th goal for Inter, taking him past Stefano Nyers for third place on Inter’s all-time list. It also gave Inter a third Serie A win from two goals down in 2026, the most of any team in Europe‘s top five leagues.

It was a lively opening, with Andy Diouf’s low shot from the edge of the area forcing Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret into an early save.

The visitors, missing Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay after it was revealed he needs a minor heart procedure, saw Højlund’s stabbed effort at the far post blocked by Martínez in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

Inter almost went into the break ahead after Federico Dimarco‘s curling 20-yard free-kick rattled the crossbar with Meret beaten.

Napoli broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half after Inter were caught playing out from the back.

Alisson Santos capitalised to send the ball into the penalty area from the left, with Inter keeper Josep Martínez palming it away. Politano saw his initial effort blocked by Nicolò Barella before then sending the rebound back into the bottom corner.

Inter were punished again for switching off in the 53rd minute after Alisson Santos’ shot was pushed away to the right, but the ball stopped just short of the touchline.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo reacted quickest to lay a pass back to the edge of the Inter area for Højlund to clip his left-footed shot into the far corner.

Inter finally sparked into life in the 56th minute when a floated cross from the right by Piotr Zielinski looked to be dropping out at the far post.

Dimarco, though, made a brilliant recovery to cut the ball back through the six-yard box where Martínez stabbed it home.

After Thuram saw a glancing header hit the far post, the Frenchman put away his next opportunity when he got up to nod in a cross from Carlos Augusto with eight minutes left.

After Napoli winger Frank Anguissa somehow failed to turn the ball in at the far post from Lorenzo Lucca’s cross, Inter completed the turnaround in stoppage time.

Napoli failed to clear their lines from a corner as Manuel Akanji stabbed the ball back across the face of goal and Martínez hooked it in to spark bedlam from the home support behind the goal.
