Real Salt Lake and United States attacking midfielder Diego Luna is expected to be out for months and will likely undergo an arthroscopic procedure to determine the extent of a knee injury, sources confirmed to ESPN.
Luna was listed as absent for Real Salt Lake’s loss to New York City FC on Saturday due to a problem with his knee.
The Athletic were the first to report the extent of the injury.
Luna, 23, is now set to miss not only a crucial part of the 2026 MLS season, but also the next call up for the U.S. men’s national team.

The U.S. will face Peru, Chile, Mexico, and Canada in friendlies in late September through early October, in what will be the first games of a new World Cup cycle for coach Mauricio Pochettino.
Luna has made 18 appearances, scoring four goals, for the U.S. since making his debut in 2024 but was one of the surprise omissions from the 2026 World Cup roster.
Depending on the extent of the injury, the setback could also impact a possible move abroad this winter after being linked with clubs from outside MLS.

The MLS regular season concludes on Nov. 7, with Salt Lake currently a point out of the final playoff position in the Western Conference.
