Bayern Munich fail to score Bundesliga goal for first time in 18 months

Bayern Munich failed to score in the Bundesliga for the first time in more than 18 months as they were held to a goalless draw by newly-promoted Schalke.

Home keeper Loris Karius produced a string of fine saves, including to deny Harry Kane late on, with Vincent Kompany choosing to start with the England captain and Michael Olise on the bench.

Karius’ clean sheet meant that Bayern’s run of scoring in 47 consecutive Bundesliga games finally came to an end.

The last time Kompany’s side failed to score in a league match was a 0-0 draw against Bayer Leverkusen on Feb. 15, 2025.

The run is the club’s longest since they went on a remarkable Bundesliga-record 87-game scoring streak between 2020 and 2022.

The German giants have also scored in every competitive game they’ve played, regardless of competition, since a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup in July 2025.

“We had our moments and big chances,” Kompany said of the draw with Schalke.

“We had two or three one-v-ones with the goalkeeper. When you play against a compact, aggressive team that does things well, you need to score your goals in those moments.

“In terms of chances, we could’ve won this game, but that’s football.”

The point was the first Schalke had taken against Bayern since 2017.

“Loris Karius was very good and definitely the right choice for Man of the Match,” Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer said of his opposite number. “We had three big chances that he kept out. That was definitely key to us not winning this game.”

For the first time since September 2024, Bayern do not sit atop the Bundesliga table — Saturday’s draw brought to an end a run of 67 matchdays after which Kompany’s side were in first place.

Freiburg currently lead the league after a 4-1 win over Werder Bremen on the opening weekend and a 1-0 victory at Paderborn on Saturday.

Information from PA and ESPN Global Research contributed to this report.
