Everton deny Manchester United second win of the season with last-gasp equaliser from Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Everton struck late to break Manchester United hearts on Merseyside, as Ainsley Maitland-Niles equalised in the 96th minute and the match ended 2-2 after a frantic finish.

United may have thought they’d won it in the 88th minute, when Benjamin Šeško scored soon after coming on as a substitute to make it 2-1 following Tyrique George’s goal just five minutes earlier that had levelled the match.

But United’s ecstasy turned to agony when Maitland-Niles scored a screamer from outside of the box with the last kick of the game.

It was a pulsating end to a rollercoaster match. United had initially taken the lead early in the second half through an excellent Bryan Mbeumo solo goal, as the Cameroonian had weaved his way through the Everton defence before rifling the ball into the bottom left corner.

But the Toffees — who remain unbeaten after the first three games of the season — kept pushing and got their reward when George smashed it in from a tight angle, following good work from new signing Hayden Hackney to thread the ball through to the former Chelsea man.

It was a relatively even game and neither side was able to find the breakthrough in the first half. Then, the second half exploded into life with four goals — with three of them coming after the 80th minute.

Michael Carrick and United will view it as a wasted chance to make it back-to-back wins after their thumping 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town last weekend. Conceding so late after taking the lead twice will be dispiriting for Bruno Fernandes and co.

That result also means that United have now failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their first three Premier League games. They conceded two goals against Hull City, two against Ipswich and another two today. Carrick will surely be seeking to shore up his team’s defence and quickly.

Everton, meanwhile, will be delighted with a snatching a point right at the death. The Toffees are proving a difficult team to beat at this early stage in the season, as they also salvaged a point away at Bournemouth last weekend — when James Tarkowski struck in stoppage time.

After a disappointing end to the transfer window — in which a deal for Folarin Balogun collapsed spectacularly on deadline day and left Everton with just one striker in the squad in the form of Thierno Barry, while Iliman Ndiaye departed for Manchester City — David Moyes will be pleased to see that his side have plenty of fight in them.
