Goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr. scores twice to secure dramatic comeback point in Eredivisie

Goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr., son of the former Netherlands player and coach of the same name, was on the scoresheet not once, but twice for Telstar in their 2-2 draw with Cambuur in the Dutch Eredivisie on Sunday.

Both of his strikes were from the penalty spot, and come after he saved Telstar from falling into a relegation playoff last season with a successful spot-kick in May.

There was more of the same drama this time around as Koeman Jr. first scored in the 63rd minute to halve a two-goal deficit for Telstar before slotting home again in the 11th minute of stoppage time to secure a last-gasp draw.

The goalkeeper-led comeback was made all more the remarkable by the fact that Telstar were made to play with 10 after Nökkvi Þórisson was shown a red card just twenty minutes into the game.

Cambuur then appeared in cruise control with a two-goal lead but it was Koeman Jr. who completed the late comeback for his side with a composed second penalty.

“I’m simply at the top of the list now. I can take a good penalty; I have confidence in that. I have no doubts,” Koeman Jr. said.

During both penalties, as well as a third one that was eventually overturned after VAR intervention, the Cambuur players tried to distract Koeman Jr.

“They’re going to talk to me, you know that beforehand. But you won’t get me worked up,” he said with a smile.

The 31-year-old also chose the bottom right corner for both of his spot-kicks and hinted he could change it up the next time he steps up to the penalty spot.

“Maybe I should change my angle sometime. Although, if it’s hard enough, the keeper can’t catch it,” he added.

Information from ESPN Netherlands contributed to this report.
