Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have poked fun at Southampton‘s “Spygate” scandal in an advert for the Championship club’s new sponsor.
Wrexham host Southampton on Saturday and the two famous co-owners have stirred the pre-match pot with this new advert.
As part of a promotion for their new sponsor, internet browser “Firefox,” Reynolds and Mac talk about the importance of security while standing next to a tree — a reference to how an intern working for Southampton was caught spying on a Middlesbrough training session ahead of their Championship playoff semifinal last season.

Southampton won that playoff semifinal, but were then charged with three counts of spying. Two were earlier in the season ahead of matches with Oxford and Ipswich alongside the Middlesbrough case. Southampton were hit with a four-point penalty ahead of this season, and were thrown out of the Championship playoff final, a decision which saw Middlesbrough re-instated.
The FA charged Southampton manager Tonda Eckert in July for misconduct and bringing the game into disrepute. The FA has not yet released a verdict.
In the minute-long video, Mac and Reynold emerge from behind a tree. Reynolds says: “Today, for no particular reason, we want to talk about the importance of privacy.” Mac continues: “Specifically how to prevent spies from seeing what you’re doing.”

“There’s some things,” Reynolds continues, “that you just don’t want any other people to see.”
They say the message isn’t just for Wrexham fans, but also for those who follow Oxford, Ipswich, Middlesbrough and people everywhere. Reynolds finishes by saying: “Refreshing, huh? An organisation that actually respects your privacy.”
