Harry Kane on Ballon d’Or: 73 goals last season ‘speaks for itself’

Harry Kane has said that his tally of 73 goals last season “speaks for itself” in the race for the Ballon d’Or.

The Bayern Munich and England striker is among the favourites to claim the award in October, alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal, after a goalscoring campaign only ever bettered by Lionel Messi.

“I’ve never liked to talk about myself too much,” Kane said in an interview with Marca. “The only thing I would say is that last season was incredible, on a personal level and as a team. It was, by far, the best season of my life.

“It’s true that to finish on 73 goals, the second-highest tally in history, speaks for itself. I’m extremely proud of that. I can only thank my teammates and everyone who has helped me to make that possible.

“But the Ballon d’Or is not in my hands. It depends on the people that vote. From my point of view, last season is in the past. I’m now focused on this one and I’m eager to see what else I can achieve.

“I know that people are going to speak a lot about the Ballon d’Or until October, because it’s a big award.”

The 33-year-old, who added that it might be a good omen that this year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony will be held in London, is also now just one Golden Shoe away from making history.

Should he finish this season as the top scorer in European leagues for the third time, he will join Messi (six) and Cristiano Ronaldo (four) as the only players to have claimed the award more than twice.

“Messi and Ronaldo dominated football for a whole generation,” he said. “They are two of the best in history.

“To be part of that conversation is already special. It’s a goal.

“Being a striker, I’m expected to score goals. The Golden Boot is not my only goal but, of course, I know that, if I win it, I’ll also be helping the team. So all of that just motivates me.

“Every time I win one, I want another, then another, and this time will be no different. I hope to be there again this season, scoring as many goals as I can in the Bundesliga, and we will see if I can get another.”
