Djed Spence completes €30m transfer from Tottenham to Inter Milan: ‘Time for a new chapter’

England defender Djed Spence has completed his transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Inter Milan after the player described his four-year stay in north London as a “special chapter” in his career.

Spence has signed a five-year deal with Inter Milan, with sources telling ESPN that the teams agreed a fee of around €30 million.

The 26-year-old is set to be a replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who made the move to Real Madrid earlier this summer.

Spence played in all eight games for England at the 2026 World Cup, including starting the semifinal loss to Argentina and third-place playoff win over France.

He departs Tottenham after making 85 appearances for the Premier League club, with the team’s Europa League triumph standing out as the highlight of his time in north London.

ESPN previously reported that head coach Roberto De Zerbi did not view Spence as an essential part of his plans for the upcoming campaign.

Last month, De Zerbi described Pedro Porro as the “best in the world” in the right-back position.

“A special chapter comes to an end, It’s been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I’ll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao,” Spence said in a social media post shortly before the move was confirmed by both clubs.

“Thanks to all the staff members who’ve helped me along the way, the players who’ve become family & most importantly thank you to the fans. Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart. COYS !!!”

Spurs have also signed Andy Robertson on a free-transfer and the former Liverpool defender is expected to play a prominent role at left-back in competition with Destiny Udogie, should the latter prove his fitness after a troubled preseason.

Spurs signed Spence from Middlesbrough in July 2022 in a £19m deal which included various add-ons related to international performances.

He made his England debut in September 2025 — an achievement which sources suggest triggered a £1m payment to Middlesbrough — before he became a surprise inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup earlier this summer.

Although the fullback impressed during the tournament, sources said Spurs were keen to cash in after his value increased as a result.

He is now set for a second spell in Italy, having spent six months on loan at Genoa in 2024.

Spence’s move comes hours after Spurs confirmed club captain Cristian Romero had completed a move to Atlético Madrid.

Information from ESPN’s James Olley contributed to this report.
