Real Madrid win U20 cup, three red cards for Santiago Wanderers

Opponents Santiago Wanderers had three players sent off as Real Madrid won the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup at the Bernabéu in front of a record youth crowd of over 52,000 fans.

Goals from Daniel Yañez, Fran Santamaría and Roberto Martín saw Madrid lift the trophy for the first time, in a game which pitted last season’s UEFA Youth League winners against the U20 Copa Libertadores champions.

In front of a record 52,117 crowd, Wanderers were reduced to 10 men after just 25 minutes when Alexander Dubó was red carded, before two more players — Cristopher Valenzuela and Nicolás Carvacho — were dismissed in a bad-tempered finale.

The U20 Intercontinental Cup, which features the winners of European and South American youth club competitions, was founded in 2022, with Benfica, Boca Juniors and Flamengo — twice — winning the previous editions.

Saturday’s attendance at the Bernabéu beat the previous record for youth football, set in the 2025 final at Brazil‘s Maracanã Stadium.

Madrid’s U19 side qualified by winning the UEFA Youth League last April, beating Club Brugge on penalties, while Wanderers beat Flamengo in the U20 Libertadores final in another shootout.

Dubó set the tone for the final when he was shown a straight red card for a foul on Yañez, and the Madrid forward scored from the resulting free-kick to make it 1-0.

Christian Silva levelled for Wanderers, and Madrid substitute Santamaría made it 2-1 late in the game.

Valenzuela and Carvacho were both sent off, and Yañez missed a penalty, before Martín secured the home side’s victory in a chaotic end to the match.
