Éderson on failed Man United move: ‘I honestly don’t know what happened’

Midfielder Éderson insists he does not know what happened with his failed move to Manchester United.

Atalanta accepted an initial £35 million ($47m) bid from United with £4 million in potential performance related add-ons, sources told ESPN in June.

But, after a medical in the United States while on World Cup duty with Brazil he flew to England for further tests with specialists, only for the move to subsequently be called off.

“I honestly don’t know what happened,” Éderson, who signed a new contract with Atalanta in the wake of the collapse of the transfer, told Sky Italia.

“I always had interest from other clubs, and I could have gone to another English side.

“The tests went well, I don’t know what changed. I’ve been with Atalanta for four years and always played.

“I could have just waited to see what happened, but the great rapport with the club convinced me to stay and sign a new contract.”

The midfielder had been set to sign a four-year deal with the option of another year, sources told ESPN.

Since agreeing that deal with Atalanta, United have brought in two players who play in Éderson’s position: Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.

Last week, they also agreed a deal with Brighton to sign another midfielder, Carlos Baleba, for an initial £65 million ($88.7m) plus £5 million in potential add-ons, sources told ESPN.

Éderson has captained Atalanta in both of their games so far this season — Thursday’s 0-0 UEFA Conference League playoff first leg draw with Hapoel Tel Aviv, and Sunday’s 2-1 win over Sassuolo in Serie A.

United will look to recover from a humbling 2-0 defeat to Hull City in their opening game when they host Ipswich Town on Sunday.
