It feels like the new club season has only just begun, and yet we are already having to reckon with the prospect of 2026-27’s first international break.
While fans have grown used to matches between national teams providing an early interruption just a few weeks into the campaign, there will be something different about the upcoming round of men’s international fixtures: It will be a week longer.
While that may sound like a terrifying prospect to many a fan hooked on the top club competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, Premier League and LaLiga, the situation is not as bad as it sounds. That’s because this break is the first to fall under FIFA‘s reconfigured international match calendar.
Previously, in the first half of each season there were three separate two-game international breaks held in September, October and November every year, with another the following March. But to minimize disruption to the domestic club schedule across the men’s and women‘s game, FIFA voted unanimously to approve changes to its calendar in 2023. The 2026-27 season will be the first to see these alterations come into effect.
As such, we will now see an extended, 16-day international break taking place between Sept. 21 and Oct. 6 (between Premier League gameweeks 5 and 6) that will allow national teams to fit four matches into one window. This reduces the number of international breaks in the first half of the season from three to two, and limits the total number of weeks that club seasons are put on hold reduced from six to five.
From now on, there will be only three international breaks a season that fall during the domestic campaign. This season, they are as follows:
1. (between Premier League gameweeks 5 and 6)
2. (between Premier League gameweeks 10 and 11)
3. (between Premier League gameweeks 30 and 31)

As per FIFA’s updated calendar, the fourth and fifth international breaks of the season come in June and July, once the club season is over. That allows room in the itinerary for international tournaments to take place during a period when most club leagues around the world are not active. For example, the finals of the Concacaf Gold Cup, CAF Africa Cup of Nations and UEFA Nations League will all be held next summer. The one exception to this is the AFC Asian Cup, which will take place in Saudi Arabia next year between Jan. 7 and Feb. 5.
While the changes to the international calendar will certainly have an impact when it comes to limiting the disruption to the domestic season, they don’t go far enough for Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s chief of global football development. Speaking in 2021, the former Arsenal manager revealed that he wanted to drastically reduce the current system of five international breaks without reducing the number of games.

Wenger’s idea — which he himself admitted was a “gamble” — was to stage two breaks (in October and March) or even just one (in October) for a month in total in a bid to reduce workload on players and alleviate the “chaos” and “congestion” in the modern game. All well and good, you might think — although, were a player to be injured during the month in question, they wouldn’t have a chance to play international football again for many months, maybe all year.
FIFA’s decision to merge the September and October breaks will be good news for supporters who are tired of having the club season broken up three times in as many months right at the start of the season. However, fans going three entire weeks without seeing their team play is going to take some getting used to.
