When Manchester City announced the signing of teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi on Wednesday morning, the club used the social media tagline “the future doesn’t wait its turn.” It was particularly apt.
Only 18, Bouaddi perhaps should be waiting, but a combination of his performances at the 2026 World Cup for Morocco and a summer exodus in City’s midfield mean that he’s poised to take center stage at the Etihad this season.
Asked by club media what his role would be at City, Bouaddi said it was “for the future.” But on Sunday against Bournemouth, Enzo Maresca picked center back Marc Guéhi in midfield. That suggests that Bouaddi — whose transfer cost an initial €95 million, plus €5 million in add-ons, to bring in from Ligue 1 side Lille — may find himself in the team sooner rather than later. As the Instagram caption made clear, the future is now, and he’s expected to be part of the travelling squad for the trip to Crystal Palace on Friday.
“He’s ready,” Maresca told a news conference on Thursday. “He’s been working with his former club so he’s fit. We’ll see how long he needs to adapt, but for sure he’s ready to work.”

The plan for Bouaddi, the most expensive teenage transfer in Premier League history, has already changed a couple of times.
City have been tracking him since he made his senior debut for Lille as a 16-year-old in 2023. His stock went up even further when he starred in a UEFA Champions League tie against Real Madrid on his 17th birthday. Even after he produced a stunning display for Morocco against Brazil in New Jersey at the World Cup, City’s conversations around Bouaddi weren’t focused on whether they should sign him, but how long they should delay any potential arrival.
There were discussions between director of football Hugo Viana and his recruitment team about how much competition they would face from the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain for Bouaddi’s signature, and whether they could afford to pause and revisit their interest next summer. There were also conversations about negotiating a deal now, before loaning him back to Lille so he could continue his development in Ligue 1.

In the end, City decided they couldn’t wait. Not only did they eventually agree to meet Lille’s full valuation to ensure the deal got done, but Bouaddi will be part of Maresca’s first-team squad this season. Depending on what happens between now and the transfer deadline, he could be a regular starter in the Premier League and Champions League.
“We have watched him very, very closely and throughout that process we have become increasingly convinced he is a huge talent who will thrive at City,” Viana said at Bouaddi’s unveiling. “We are really happy he has joined us, and our job now is to ensure we provide him with everything he needs to fulfil his potential.”
Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Tijjani Reijnders and Nico González have all departed this offseason and, as things stand, Bouaddi is one of just three recognised central midfielders in the squad along with another summer signing, Elliot Anderson, and Mateo Kovacic.
Nico O’Reilly played in midfield against Bournemouth, but Maresca views the 21-year-old as a left back.

City aren’t quite finished in the market. They’re expected to make at least one offer to Chelsea to sign midfielder Enzo Fernández before the window closes, although there’s no guarantee he will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge as a deadline set by Chelsea to receive offers of £120 million or above for the transfer of the Argentina international has already passed.
Whatever role Bouaddi — who made the FC 100 list for the first time in 2026 — has to play this season, City are sure he can handle it. He says he was “lucky” to be fast-tracked into the first team at Lille, but he’s doing himself a disservice. Alongside his obvious talent, he has displayed a level of maturity early on that’s unusual for such a young player.
Away from football, he takes his education seriously. He’s earned diplomas in maths and physics; Bouaddi is a keen mathematician, and he shows the same intelligence on the pitch. On his World Cup debut against Brazil, he found himself in a midfield battle against Casemiro, Bruno Guimarães and Lucas Paquetá. He was unfazed, and ended the game with more touches and more accurate passes than any other teammate.

“Ayyoub’s potential is extremely high, a player equipped with everything a top midfielder needs,” Viana said. “At just 18, he already has outstanding football intelligence and that will only improve under the guidance of [Maresca].”
Maresca has already hinted that he understands the balance between allowing Bouaddi to have an immediate impact and ensuring he gets the space and patience he needs to develop.
“He’s quite calm,” the Italian said on Thursday. “He doesn’t look 18. We need to go slowly. He’s come from a different country, so there’s no rush for him. He’ll help us now and in the future. He’s very mature, being just 18.
“My job and job of the club is to manage him in the best way. He’s young and he needs time.”

Born in Creil, a small city in northern France, Bouaddi started playing football at the age of six. Despite only being eight when Pep Guardiola took over at City in 2016, he remembers often watching the team on TV.
“I liked to watch Kevin De Bruyne, also Yaya Toure,” he said in his first City interview. “I was a bit younger, but I saw a lot of videos of him. A lot of great players have been at City so like Rodri, I can’t tell you all of the players that I watched at City, there are too many.”
After a decade of success under Guardiola, and now without De Bruyne and Rodri, Bouaddi has arrived to be part of City’s new era. He’s been earmarked as the cornerstone of the club’s next great team, although he might find himself thrown in at the deep end sooner than expected.
